Vision & Mission

We want to see a world with an emergence of growing networks of communities and systems arising to replace the more extractive models of the current paradigm.

Our Mission

Our Mission at Highland Lake Cove is to create a place that is as renewable as it can be within its ecosystem, and to share what we learn by creating working models of our systems that are both replicable and scalable.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

-Margaret Mead

Starting with Why

Discouraged by a personal realization that the American Dream was highly overrated, and inspired by Margaret Mead's famous quote that dedicated people can change the world, we began to envision a retreat center for groups of people on a quest for spiritual connection and conscious understandings of the interrelatedness of all life.

Family at the Center

The Lindsey family lived three miles from Highland Lake on a 7-acre mini-homestead.

Treska, was always in the garden and her favorite saying at supper time was, "Everything on this table was picked today."

The Lindsey's moved to Highland Lake and they began to go into business together, starting the Highland Lake Inn and affiliated restaurant.

Real Places

When the vision for the surrounding neighborhoods began to take shape in 1998, the slogan was “Real places: creating a town that works.”

What creates a real place?

  • Real food - Connection to the environment that grows the food, the gardening process, and the harvesting and preparation of the food

  • Purpose - Creating deeper meaning and the opportunity for real connection

  • Real People - Authentic people, questing for the best life, and bringing their passions and purpose to their life’s work

Renewable Business

The upcoming Community Incubator will focus on creating alternatives for an ailing world, bringing visionaries together, and taking good notes about the lessons we learn.

It's time to build a better future - to enhance the health of our living & economic systems for the generations to come.

It is our hope that Highland Lake will be an example of what a renewable future can be.
